Indian court releases 'Cockroach' movement leaders

–

Neutral summary

A court in New Delhi on Sunday, October 11, ordered the release of Abhijeet Dipke, founder of the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), and two fellow leaders, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, detained a day earlier ahead of a protest. The release was conditional on not breaching the peace for one year, said Ratna Singh, the party's head lawyer. Delhi Police said a bail bond of 50,000 rupees was furnished to ensure good behaviour. The leaders were detained on Saturday, October 10, upon arriving on a flight from Mumbai, before they could lead the demonstration. The protests target Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, whom the opposition accuses of mass removal of voters from electoral rolls — figures cited by media put the number at 130 million. Authorities deny the allegations. Ahead of Saturday's action, central New Delhi was locked down, the metro was closed, internet was restricted and thousands of police were deployed; the group says thousands of protesters were detained. After his release, Dipke said protests would continue. His family claims police delayed his release, causing him to miss his grandmother's funeral; police deny this. The CJP also alleged possible 'phone cloning' and evidence planting by police.
