Trump to speak with Putin over suspected plague case in Siberia

–

Neutral summary

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he will speak with Russian President Vladimir Putin “very soon” about a suspected pneumonic plague case in Russia. The announcement came as Washington and the United Nations called for transparency from Moscow following the death of 28-year-old lab assistant Daria Shipilova at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute in Siberia. Russian authorities deny imposing anti-plague measures and say they found no “high-risk pathogens” among the deceased’s contacts. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US has sent a formal request for additional information from the Russian government, warning that Washington is operating with limited information. The World Health Organization assesses the risk of spread beyond Russia as “very low” and says it is in contact with Russian officials. The US embassy has warned American citizens about the disease and urged them to leave Russia. The Kremlin welcomed Trump’s offer of help and said Russia is ready to assist the US in fighting epidemics. China broke its silence on the issue, saying it is cooperating with Russia. Sources differ on details: some say Shipilova died in a laboratory accident in Shelekhov, while others report her death occurred last week without specifying circumstances.
