Nobel Prize in Physics 2026 awarded to Francis Halzen for neutrino detection
–
Neutral summary
The 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded to Belgian physicist Francis Halzen, a professor at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, for his “decisive contribution” to the IceCube neutrino observatory and the discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. The announcement was made on October 6 in Stockholm, and Halzen became the sole laureate this year — the first time in three decades that the prize went to a single scientist, as UOL notes. The idea of using Antarctic ice to detect neutrinos was Halzen’s, and the concept traces back to a proposal by Soviet physicist Moisey Markov in the 1960s, according to Meduza and Lenta.ru. IceCube consists of a cubic kilometer of ice with thousands of basketball-sized light detectors placed nearly three kilometers deep. In 2013, shortly after the observatory began operating, it recorded the first high-energy neutrinos of extraterrestrial origin. Neutrinos are among the most abundant elementary particles in the universe; they barely interact with matter and pass through Earth, earning them the nickname “ghost particles.” Halzen himself admitted that every October, when Nobel laureates were announced, he felt “miserable” for not having won, and now his wait is over, as Clarín and Phys.org report. A similar project is being implemented in Russia in the depths of Lake Baikal, according to RBC.
