Portugal coach Jorge Jesus declines to comment on Ronaldo's statement

–

Neutral summary

Portugal coach Jorge Jesus responded on Wednesday, 7 October, to Cristiano Ronaldo's statement about the conflict in the national team. The coach said he had read the text but would not comment on it. “I read the statement, and now, as I do every day, I go to the federation to work, to think about the team and the national team,” he was quoted as saying by O Jogo. A day earlier, on 6 October, Ronaldo published a roughly 2,000-word message on social media in which he apologised to his teammates for leaving the squad and accused Jesus of breaking two agreements reached before the Nations League match against Norway. According to media reports, the coach was supposed to publicly place the forward on a par with Pele and Maradona. Ronaldo left the squad on a private plane before the away match against Denmark without informing the coaching staff. CNN Portugal reported that the 41-year-old is unwilling to return to the team while Jesus remains in charge. Jesus had earlier said Ronaldo would be welcome back for the next international break. Several outlets, including Daily Mail and GB News, cited Portuguese journalist Rui Santos as saying Ronaldo was “outraged” by how the situation was handled. The Citizen and Libération noted that in his statement Ronaldo acknowledged that “responsibility lies exclusively” with him.
