UAE attorney general calls Flydubai cockpit attack a terrorist act
–
Neutral summary
The UAE attorney general, Hamad Saif al-Shamsi, said on Saturday, October 3, that the incident aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv was an attempted terrorist attack. According to the investigation, the co-pilot, 29-year-old Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, attacked the captain with the cockpit's crash axe and tried to take control of the plane. Passengers and crew intervened and subdued him. The aircraft, carrying between 174 and 182 people (figures vary by outlet), made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia on September 30. Several media outlets report that al-Hammami admitted he intended to crash the plane in Israel. He was reportedly barred from flying in Oman in 2024 over suspected radical views and later left Oman Air. The UAE prosecutor general urged the public not to spread unverified information, and the investigation is ongoing. Israel has reportedly tightened aviation security measures, including checks on pilots flying into the country.
