27 killed in two mass shootings in South Africa within hours
–
Neutral summary
Two mass shootings in South Africa within hours of each other left at least 27 people dead and 26 wounded, police said on Sunday. The first attack took place at a tavern in the mining township of Wedela, west of Johannesburg, where around 7:30 pm eight gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols opened fire inside and outside the bar, killing 17 people (13 men and four women, according to the Daily Mail) and wounding 15. The second occurred in the settlement of Lwandle near Cape Town, where gunmen opened fire at a venue selling grilled meat, killing 10 people (five at the scene and five later in hospital) and wounding 11. Police have launched a manhunt and mobilised specialised investigation units; no suspects have been arrested in either shooting. The motives remain unknown, but initial investigations suggest one attack may have been linked to a turf war between illegal miners and the other to a business rivalry. Daily Maverick reports that at least 196 people have been killed in mass shootings in South Africa since January 2026. The country records about 60 homicides a day, and the authorities have previously deployed the military to help police in crime-ridden areas.
