Giant pandas Ping Ping and Fu Shuang arrive at Zoo Atlanta
–
Neutral summary
Two giant pandas sent by China arrived at Zoo Atlanta on Sunday, September 27. Male Ping Ping and female Fu Shuang, both born in 2020, departed from Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport aboard a specially equipped Boeing 777 cargo plane donated by FedEx and dubbed the FedEx Panda Express. The flight took about 16 hours, with veterinarians and Chinese caretakers monitoring the animals en route; the caretakers will also help the pandas adjust to their new home. Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the plan to send the pandas to the US during his visit to Washington last week. The transfer was one of the few agreements to emerge from the leaders’ summit, which outlets describe as “heavy on symbolism and light on major breakthroughs.” The pandas will remain at Zoo Atlanta for ten years under the “panda diplomacy” program, a Chinese foreign policy tool that lends the animals to other nations to strengthen bilateral ties. A farewell ceremony was held in Chengdu before the animals were handed over to Zoo Atlanta staff.
