Hong Kong court sentences Joshua Wong to 10 more years
–
Neutral summary
The High Court of Hong Kong on Thursday, November 5, sentenced 30-year-old pro-democracy activist Joshua Wong to 10 years in prison for colluding with foreign forces to damage national security. It is his second conviction under the national security law imposed by Beijing in 2020, and he is the first activist in Hong Kong to be sentenced twice under the law. Wong, detained since November 2020, is already serving a sentence of four years and eight months for subversion. He pleaded guilty to the new charge in September 2025, which, according to the Associated Press, allowed Judge William Tam to reduce the sentence from an initial 13 years. With the new sentence, Wong is expected to remain in prison until late 2036, when he will be 40. Human rights groups, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, condemned the verdict, calling it “cruel and unjust” and “a grim reminder of Hong Kong’s disregard for human rights.” The European Union expressed regret over the sentence and demanded Wong’s immediate release, warning of consequences for the rule of law and political pluralism in Hong Kong. Criticism also came from the United States: Rep. John Moolenaar (R-Mich.), chair of the House Select Committee on China, called Wong a “hero.” Wong rose to prominence at age 17 as a face of the 2014 “Umbrella Revolution” and later became a leading figure in the 2019 protests.
