NASA's Swift telescope burns up after 22 years in orbit

–

Neutral summary

NASA's Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory reentered Earth's atmosphere and burned up over Indonesia on November 4, ending its 22-year mission studying gamma-ray bursts, the most powerful energy explosions in the cosmos. The 1.5-ton spacecraft entered the atmosphere over North Sumatra; most of it disintegrated, but some fragments, including components made of titanium and nickel, may have reached the surface. The US Space Force estimated the probability of debris causing harm to anyone at roughly 1 in 2,100. The reentry followed a failed rescue attempt: in July, the Link mission was launched to grab the telescope and boost it to a more stable orbit, but the spacecraft suffered problems and returned to Earth without completing its task. The rescue operation reportedly cost about $30 million. Swift launched in 2004 on a planned two-year mission but operated for over two decades, detecting more than 2,000 gamma-ray bursts. Some outlets, including Futura Sciences and Numerama, reported videos circulating on social media that may show the telescope's final moments, though their authenticity is unconfirmed. Following Swift's demise, NASA is now looking at ways to extend the life of the Hubble telescope, according to Spektrum.
