Keisha Lance Bottoms becomes first Black woman elected US governor
–
Neutral summary
Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, former mayor of Atlanta, won Georgia's gubernatorial race, becoming the first Black woman elected governor of a US state. She defeated Republican Rick Jackson, a healthcare billionaire, and flipped the governor's office for Democrats for the first time since 1998. Bottoms, 56, previously served as a senior adviser to former President Joe Biden and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement. She will succeed Republican Governor Brian Kemp, who is leaving after two terms. Her victory was part of a broader Democratic success in the midterms, which also saw historic wins in other states, including the election of Texas's first Latina governor. Some sources, including Handelsblatt, noted that Jackson's defeat put pressure on automaker Audi, which had announced its first US plant at a Trump rally supporting Jackson. Voters in Atlanta, according to Ouest-France, compared the win to Obama's victory, expressing hope for change by 2028.
