Abdul El-Sayed becomes first Muslim elected to US Senate

–

Neutral summary

Democrat Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in the Michigan Senate race, becoming the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. According to Decision Desk HQ, his margin was about seven percentage points. In his victory speech in Detroit, El-Sayed jokingly addressed Vice President JD Vance as “habibi,” noting that Vance would have to swear him in in January. The campaign was marked by attacks: Donald Trump called him a “jihadist,” and opponents questioned his loyalty to America. El-Sayed, a 42-year-old physician and son of Egyptian immigrants, previously led health departments in Detroit and Wayne County; he advocates for universal free healthcare and lowering the cost of living. His win was part of a Democratic sweep that gave the party majorities in both chambers of Congress. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the victory “incredibly exciting,” noting that the candidate had to overcome significant financial resources, racism, and slander. Outlets differ on his speech: the New York Post, citing a body language expert, calls it “divisive” and focused on “perceived enemies,” while France 24 says El-Sayed rebuffed attacks with “humour and hope.”
