Trump says US will end $4B in annual aid to Israel
–
Neutral summary
US President Donald Trump announced that Washington will end its annual $4 billion in military aid to Israel by the end of 2026. The statement came on the day of US midterm elections, where support for Israel has been a contentious issue. Trump said the deal was made with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu months ago, and that Israel, as a 'very successful country,' no longer needs the funds. He added that the US will continue selling weapons to Israel and will help if needed. The current memorandum of understanding provides Israel with about $3.8 billion a year until September 2028, and Trump did not explain how the funding would end. Israeli authorities were taken by surprise by the announcement, according to radio Kan, although Netanyahu had said in May he favored phasing out US military aid over a decade. Opposition politician Gadi Eisenkot accused Netanyahu of risking Israel's strategic relationship with the US. Some outlets, including Haaretz, expressed concern that the end of aid could be seen by Israel's enemies as a sign of weakness, and that Democrats might impose stricter scrutiny on arms sales to Israel.
