US strikes Iranian island of Qeshm in Strait of Hormuz
–
Neutral summary
The United States carried out limited strikes on Iran's Qeshm Island in the Strait of Hormuz, US officials said. The attack came hours before the US midterm elections and after President Donald Trump touted diplomatic progress with Tehran. Iranian state media reported explosions on the island, and residents in nearby areas also heard blasts. US officials described the strikes as defensive and said they targeted Iranian surface-to-air missile sites that were used against American assets. The Pentagon referred questions to US Central Command, which did not respond. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said a resumption of US attacks would benefit no one, while Iranian military officials warned of an immediate and broader response to any new aggression. According to the Wall Street Journal, the strike was the latest in a series of undeclared US operations against Iranian targets in recent months. Analysts say Washington is waging a 'managed war' with Iran, while Israel pressures the US to escalate further. The strikes did not appear to derail ongoing diplomatic efforts, with Qatari mediation continuing.
