Trump closes midterm campaign with Reflecting Pool speech
–
Neutral summary
President Donald Trump wrapped up his midterm campaign with a speech at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, but instead of a traditional appeal to voters, he spent more than 20 minutes discussing the pool's renovation, pipes, joints and turf. According to media reports, Republican allies were surprised by the choice of topic, having expected Trump to use his last major appearance to tout the party's achievements. The pool's restoration, which cost more than $14 million, ran into problems: peeling paint and algae turned the water green, and the pool was closed to visitors until November 20. Trump also repeated his pledge to send $5,000 checks to every American adult if Republicans keep control of Congress. He called Democratic candidates “the most extreme and dangerous slate of candidates in American history” and urged supporters to vote “as if I'm on the ballot.” At the same time, he acknowledged that “we gave this a very strong shot” and lowered expectations by noting that a sitting president typically loses midterms. Polls predicted Democratic gains, with the party potentially taking control of both chambers. In the final days of the campaign, Trump also made provocative remarks, including attacks on Muslim politicians and a claim that the United States has been “given” Greenland.
