Neutral summary
Irish middle-distance runner Ciara Mageean died on 1 November at the age of 34 after a battle with bowel cancer. Her family announced the news on social media. “This morning at 6:30, Ciara lost her fight against cancer, surrounded by her loved ones. A beloved daughter, sister, wife and friend, she was an inspiration to many,” the family said in a statement quoted by CNews and other outlets. Mageean was the 2024 European champion in the 1500 metres and had won three European Championship medals in the event. She competed at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro and 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. She announced her cancer diagnosis in July 2025, later revealing it was advanced bowel cancer. Her book about the illness, “My Greatest Race,” was published in the summer of 2026. Mageean married Thomas Moran just weeks before her death. Tributes came from the President of Ireland, the Olympic Federation of Ireland, the Diamond League and many athletes. Izvestia reported that the Diamond League wrote: “A great loss for the athletics community. Thank you for the memories you gave us at competitions and beyond.”
