North Korea fires about a dozen ballistic missiles toward East Sea
–
Neutral summary
North Korea launched about a dozen short-range ballistic missiles toward the East Sea on Thursday, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said. The missiles were fired from the Wonsan area around 12:30 p.m. local time and flew about 250 kilometers. It was Pyongyang's first missile launch in 17 days and its 17th this year. The launch came less than a week after Seoul proposed military talks with Pyongyang over the demarcation line between the two countries, and amid heightened tensions over a landmine blast in the demilitarized zone in September that Seoul blames on Pyongyang. Japan's coast guard urged ships to exercise "vigilance," and South Korea's military said it was reinforcing surveillance and maintaining readiness for possible additional launches while sharing information closely with the United States and Japan. South Korea's presidential office held an emergency meeting and urged the North to cease provocations. Earlier this month, Pyongyang also tested a new AI-assisted torpedo system and an intermediate-range hypersonic missile. "The Korea Herald" noted the launch came ahead of Pyongyang's end-of-month deadline to activate propaganda loudspeakers along the heavily armed border; CNews reported that propaganda broadcasts were heard in border areas on Thursday morning.
