Albania's anti-government protests enter fifth day with violent clashes in Tirana
–
Neutral summary
Violent anti-government protests in Albania's capital Tirana entered their fifth consecutive day on Saturday, October 17, with clashes between demonstrators and police escalating near the prime minister's office. Thousands of young Albanians gathered outside the Ministry of Education, demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and protesting against high university tuition fees, poor educational conditions and a lack of prospects for young people. Protesters threw stones, Molotov cocktails, metal objects and pyrotechnics at police, and set cars and rubbish bins on fire to use as barricades. Police responded with tear gas, water cannons, batons and, for the first time since the protests began, rubber bullets. RBC reports 207 people injured over four days of protests, including 132 police officers, while other outlets report over 160 arrests, with UOL citing 167. Reports also emerged that protesters set fire to the building of the former Russian embassy in Tirana, and in the town of Peranjas, young men stopped a truck with Serbian license plates and covered it with a flag. Rama has rejected the possibility of resignation, blaming the opposition and “foreign hands” for organizing the unrest. The United Nations and religious representatives have called for national dialogue. The movement, dubbed the “flamingo revolution,” began with peaceful protests 138 days ago but has radicalized this week.
