Netanyahu's office cast doubt on the allegations, suggesting the reports could be part of a “coordinated smear campaign” against Israel, and noted that the diplomats should have coordinated their movements with the military. The Israel Defense Forces, however, directly condemned the attack, calling the perpetrators “rioters,” and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar promised to facilitate an investigation. France demanded that Israel “stop these acts of terror,” and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington wants Israel to do more to deter settler violence. The rights group Yesh Din has documented 487 incidents of violence by settlers and soldiers since September 27, including 234 related to the olive harvest. According to the Palestinian Health Ministry, at least four people have been killed and more than 100 injured since the harvest began. The following day, October 18, US diplomats visited Taybeh to meet with members of the Christian community. Israeli police have opened an investigation into the incident.
