International phone fraud ring busted in Serbia: 18,000 scams linked
–
Neutral summary
An international police operation dubbed “Silentium,” in which Serbia played an active role, has dismantled criminal infrastructure used for telephone fraud. At least 600,000 calls were made through it, and the network is linked to more than 18,000 fraud cases. Two men were arrested in the town of Smederevo, Serbia’s Interior Ministry said. The suspects allegedly posed as bank employees and police officers to deceive victims, with the estimated damage so far standing at 764,000 euros. Acting Interior Minister Ivica Dačić said the operation confirms the importance of international cooperation and Serbia’s contribution to combating cross-border high-tech crime. He also urged citizens to be cautious when answering phone calls. Some Serbian outlets, including Pink and Blic, report the suspects may have earned up to 1.6 million euros, though this figure has not been confirmed by official sources.
