Spain's ombudsman challenges suspension of 'grandchildren law' voters' rights in Constitutional Court

–

Neutral summary

Spain's Ombudsman Ángel Gabilondo filed an appeal with the Constitutional Court on Friday evening against the suspension of voting rights for people who obtained citizenship under the 'grandchildren law' — the Democratic Memory Law. In a statement, the institution said Gabilondo had requested urgent precautionary measures and asked the court to rule on the Supreme Court's interpretation of 'the suspension of the fundamental right to vote of Spaniards naturalised in accordance with the Democratic Memory Law'. The decision was taken 'after receiving various requests'. Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission ordered that documentation for the 29 November vote be sent to all voters registered abroad, with a notice that not all of them will be able to vote. Earlier, El País reported on Juan Manuel Martínez Chas, a grandson of Galicians who emigrated to Argentina during the Civil War, who filed a complaint with the ombudsman and is trying to reach the Supreme Court in time. El Mundo notes that the ombudsman acted 'after receiving various requests', while elDiario.es reports that Gabilondo also asked the court to rule on the Supreme Court's interpretation.
