Sanchez rejects EU criticism of Spain's migration plan

–

Neutral summary

At the European Council summit on October 16, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez rejected criticism of his migration policy, saying “words do not match reality.” Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called on the European Commission to review Spain's plan to legalise the status of 600,000 irregular migrants, accusing Madrid of acting “almost the exact opposite” of other EU countries. Italian PM Giorgia Meloni joined Frederiksen in criticising the Spanish initiative. Sanchez responded by calling Spain a “top student” in tackling irregular migration and promised to answer the reproaches with “convincing figures.” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for full implementation of the EU migration and asylum pact. A group of European countries demanded a review of the Spanish regularisation programme, which had already caused friction at the previous leaders' meeting. The summit also addressed the migration crisis in Ceuta.
