Nepal floods: nine Russian trekkers cut off, five missing

–

Neutral summary

A flash flood triggered by a landslide that blocked the Budhi Gandaki River in Gorkha district struck on October 11, sweeping away more than 200 houses and five bridges. At least five people are reported missing, though some outlets give higher figures. The disaster has stranded over 100 foreign trekkers, including a group of nine Russian tourists who were trekking around Mount Manaslu and are now stuck in the village of Jagat. The flood destroyed trails and bridges, making the usual route impassable; according to Mash, the group lacks funds for a helicopter evacuation. Rescue teams, including military personnel, have so far evacuated 96 people, nine of them foreigners. The new flooding comes less than two months after an August disaster that killed over 1,400 people and left more than 5,000 missing. Nepali authorities have urged residents to evacuate from risk zones.
