Hegseth confirms 20% cut in generals, admirals and new autonomous warfare command

–

Neutral summary

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, in his State of the Force address released on September 30, confirmed a reduction of roughly 20% in general and admiral billets. Fox News earlier reported this would double last year's cuts. Hegseth described the reductions as “a necessity for a long time” and linked them to refocusing the military on war-fighting rather than the “woke” policies of previous administrations. He also announced the creation of a four-star Autonomous Warfare Command (AutoWarCom) to oversee drone operations and the development of autonomous and robotic capabilities across all service branches. Hegseth cited the Ukraine conflict as a lesson, saying the military must adapt technology to combat faster. He also launched “Project Meridian,” a group led by Elon Musk to study future warfare technologies, including AI, within 120 days. Libération reported that as of July there were 851 generals and admirals, slightly more than in May 2025, contradicting Hegseth's claims. Hegseth also said he does not want transgender people, overweight individuals, or those with beards in the military. Separately, he accused US media of “treason” for their coverage of the Iran conflict.
