Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Pakistan chiefs hold urgent talks on Houthi attacks
–
Neutral summary
The military chiefs of Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan held an urgent meeting in Riyadh on Friday to discuss ways to support the kingdom amid escalating attacks by Yemen's Houthis. According to statements from Saudi Arabia's Defence Ministry and Pakistan's military, the sides discussed enhancing intelligence sharing, military coordination and capability integration. The participants condemned attacks by the Iran-backed Houthis targeting the holy city of Makkah as well as the kingdom's civilian and economic infrastructure. The meeting was held under the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement signed by the three countries. It followed a meeting on Thursday in New York between the Saudi, Turkish and Pakistani foreign ministers, according to the Saudi Press Agency. Houthi attacks have intensified since July, affecting shipping routes and strategic targets and challenging a previous truce. Tehran has sought to distance itself from the rapid advance of its Houthi allies, according to reports. The Turkish parliament speaker suggested the pact could expand to other Muslim countries, including Iran. Meanwhile, restrictions on Iranian flights have been reported, with Tehran warning this could lead to similar measures against other countries in the region.
