Bachelet withdraws from UN secretary general race

Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet announced on Saturday, September 19, that she was withdrawing her candidacy for the post of UN secretary general. The decision followed the third informal vote in the Security Council, where she received only one vote in favor, 11 against, and three abstentions. In August she had received two votes, and in July six. Bachelet's candidacy was backed by Brazil and Mexico, but faced strong opposition, particularly from the United States. The Chilean government under President José Antonio Kast had withdrawn its support back in March. In a video posted on Instagram, Bachelet said her campaign had gone “against the current” for defending progressive principles and that she did not regret taking part in the race. She also stressed the importance of multilateralism and the possibility of a Latin American woman leading the organization. With her exit, seven candidates remain in the contest, including women from Costa Rica and Guyana.
