Ceuta migrant relocation turns chaotic; thousands still sleeping rough

Ceuta's president, Juan Jesús Vivas, has blocked the transfer of girls to the mainland, drawing sharp criticism from the government. The political crisis is deepening: opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo said the operation could not have been handled worse, while the Sumar party accused the police of creating insecurity. Vivas himself said on 29 July, the day before the mass border crossing, that immediate deportation of all migrants is simply impossible because it would violate the law. Meanwhile, many migrants are becoming disillusioned: La Vanguardia reports that voluntary returns to Morocco are continuing, with migrants saying it was not worth it and that the attempt was a failure.
