Judge blocks Trump's triumphal arch in Washington
–
Neutral summary
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan issued a temporary injunction late Thursday blocking the Trump administration from breaking ground on the proposed 250-foot triumphal arch near Arlington Cemetery. The order, effective for 14 days, halts all work while the court considers three lawsuits — from the District of Columbia, Virginia, and a group of veterans. Judge Chutkan ruled that D.C. and Virginia have standing to sue, citing potential economic harm from traffic disruptions. The decision came hours after the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC), stacked with Trump allies, approved the project by an 8-4 vote following a nine-hour virtual hearing with over 100 speakers, many opposed. Opponents, including veterans and relatives of those buried at Arlington, called the arch 'blasphemous' and argued it would mar the capital's skyline and disrespect the military cemetery. The White House said Friday it remains committed to the project, and a promotional website for the arch was launched shortly after the ruling. The Hill reports the administration had hoped to start work as early as Friday. Sources differ on details: CBS News and others cite the height as 250 feet, while Euronews notes Trump's plan to house drones, snipers, and ammunition in the structure.
