Canada won't get EU 'associate member' status

Politico Europe reports that von der Leyen in her speech contrasted her position with a statement by Merz, who spoke of an “alliance for the future” between the EU and Canada. Outlets note that the status of “associate member” is not provided for by EU treaties and has no legal meaning. DW reports that von der Leyen described the goal as “association without accession,” while Folha de S.Paulo writes that the dispute over wording will not prevent the two sides from drawing closer.
